Aviary Cage-Free Housing System

Aviary Cage-Free Housing System

Aviary Cage-Free Housing System

This multi-tier enriched welfare cage adopts an integrated design matching poultry houses, equipped with diversified activity spaces including cage frames and perches. The layout separates high and low drinking and feeding zones in accordance with chickens’ natural behaviors. Its door-free design eliminates the constraints of traditional caging systems and allows unrestricted movement for birds. Independent secluded laying nests, dedicated litter dust-bathing areas and perches satisfy chickens’ full needs for egg-laying, resting and foraging/playing. An outdoor sun bathing area can also be added on demand to fully safeguard animal welfare at all levels.

Little Giant's aviary system for laying hens is a fully integrated, multi-tier cage-free housing solution designed for commercial-scale operations — providing hens with the freedom of movement and behavioral enrichment that define genuine cage-free production, while maintaining the automation, egg quality, and flock oversight that commercial viability demands.

1. The multi-tier aviary is fully integrated into the poultry house, offering birds a variety of environments, including elevated tiers, littered floor space, and perches.

2. Designed to accommodate natural behaviors, the system provides drinking and feeding areas at different heights, which birds can easily reach by jumping and flying short distances.

3. Its open, doorless design eliminates confinement, granting birds significantly greater freedom of movement compared to conventional caged systems.

4. A distinct separation between activity zones and private nesting areas provides a secluded space for laying eggs and a calm environment for post-lay rest.

5. The system is equipped with a dedicated litter area for dust bathing and ample perching space, enriching bird behavior and enhancing overall welfare.

6. Optionally, the system can be extended to include an outdoor range ("winter garden"), offering birds access to sunlight and fresh air for superior welfare outcomes.

Product Feature

Nesting Area

1. Nest boxes are located on both sides of the structure, furnished with soft matting and privacy curtains to create a secure and tranquil environment for egg-laying.

2. These nests can be automatically opened or closed on a schedule. They are typically closed at night and opened during the laying period to maintain hygiene and prevent soiling.

Resting & Activity Area

1. The structure features upper and lower levels with left and right sections, all fitted with perches. To meet specific flock needs, additional perches can be installed to create a highly enriched resting space.

2. A series of platforms and stairs at varying heights allow birds to move effortlessly between the floor and different tiers by jumping and flying.

3. Removable partition nets are strategically placed. These can be managed during different growth phases to guide bird movement and encourage physical activity.

Feeding & Drinking Area

1. Feeding troughs with a chain delivery system are accessible on both levels and in all sections. Anti-roosting devices are installed above the troughs to maintain feed hygiene.

2. Drinking lines are installed separately from the feeders on each tier. This layout naturally encourages movement as birds transition between feeding and drinking, promoting activity.

Litter & Dust Bathing Area

1.The floor is covered with dry, friable litter, facilitating natural behaviors like scratching, foraging, and dust bathing.

2. Depending on the farm layout, this litter area can be connected to a secure outdoor range, allowing birds to roam outside, dust bathe, and bask in sunlight.

Egg Collection System

1. Eggs are laid in the nests and automatically roll onto a central collection belt, which transports them gently to the front of the house for centralized grading and packing.

2. The system can be customized with intermediate egg transfer units to convey eggs via a central line directly to a dedicated egg handling room, streamlining the workflow.

Manure Management & Service Access

1. A manure belt system runs beneath the tiers, efficiently removing the majority of waste from the house, similar to advanced cage systems but in a cage-free environment.

2. Integrated overhead walkways allow staff to safely access the center of the house for bird monitoring and nest checks.

3. A central service corridor within the main structure provides periodic access for the birds and allows staff to perform internal maintenance and inspections.

Regulatory Compliance & Market Certification

Little Giant's cage-free aviary system is engineered to meet or exceed the following standards:

EU Directive 1999/74/EC (Cage-Free Laying Hen Housing)

  • Minimum 4 kg floor space per hen (barn system)
  • Minimum 250 cm² usable nest box area per hen
  • Minimum 15 cm perch length per hen
  • Access to litter for pecking and scratching

Note: EU member states vary in specific national interpretations. Our engineering team will confirm compliance with your target market's exact regulatory requirements.

USDA Organic / Certified Humane® / Global GAP

These certifications add additional requirements for outdoor access, stocking density, and flock management. Where outdoor access is required (free-range or organic classification), the aviary house design includes pop-hole door integration.

Zero-Cage Retail Commitments

For farms supplying egg retailers who have made cage-free pledges, the aviary system documentation package includes a system description letter and specification sheet suitable for buyer compliance submissions.

Aviary vs Conventional Cage: A Practical Comparison

Factor Conventional H-Type Layer Cage Aviary System for Laying Hens
Hen mobility Restricted within cage unit Unrestricted — full house access
Natural behavior expression Very limited Full range (perching, nesting, dust bathing)
Welfare certification Not cage-free eligible Cage-free, organic, humane-certified eligible
Market access Conventional egg market Premium / cage-free / export retail markets
Stocking density Higher birds/m² (vertical cage columns) 6–9 birds/m² (regulated by welfare standards)
Egg quality High (controlled environment) High (with proper nest box management)
Floor-laid egg rate Near zero Manageable with proper nest-to-bird ratio
Labor intensity Low (full automation) Low–Medium (requires litter management)
Construction cost Lower Higher (but opens premium market access)
Regulatory trajectory Phasing out in EU by 2027 Aligned with global cage-free transition

Why Source Your Aviary System from Little Giant?

Designed and Manufactured Under One Roof

The structure, feeding system, drinking system, egg belts, nest boxes, and climate control components of Little Giant's aviary system for laying hens are all engineered and manufactured in-house. You do not receive a bolted-together system from three suppliers. Integration is a specification, not an installation problem.

39 Years of Layer Housing Engineering — Including Cage-Free

Little Giant has manufactured layer housing systems since 1987. Our cage-free aviary designs are informed by 39 years of understanding how hens behave in automated housing systems — what drives floor egg rates, what causes feather pecking outbreaks, and what nest box design actually reduces floor-laid eggs in practice.

Climate-Tested in Real Markets

Our aviary systems have been installed in tropical climates (Southeast Asia), desert conditions (Middle East), and temperate zones (Central Asia, Africa). Each climate zone requires a different approach to ventilation, litter management, and house design. We have documented performance data from each.

EPC Turnkey Option Available

For farms building from the ground up, Little Giant offers a complete EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) service: site survey → house design → civil works → aviary installation → commissioning → training. One contract, one point of responsibility.
